US News

  • Texas and Florida are taking steps to use the states’ anti-BDS laws to divest from Ben and Jerry’s parent company and prevent contracting with the ice cream maker. [Link]
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee added $25 billion to Biden’s proposed military spending bill. [Link]
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a provision in the 2022 NDAA expanding the draft to women. [Link]

Caribbean 

  • The Pentagon says it has identified seven Colombian soldiers who were involved in the Moise assassination who received US DoD or Start Department training. [Link]
  • Biden announced sanctions against a high-ranking Cuban official and a police unit. Biden said the sanctions are just the beginning. The Biden Administration used the Global Magnitsky Act to implement the sanctions. [Link]
  • Republican Congressman Alex Moony plans to introduce an Authorization for Use of Military Force bill. The AUMF would give the president power to use the military to ensure humanitarian aid to Cuba. [Link]

Afghanistan 

  • The US has carried out several airstrikes over the past few days. The strikes targeted the Taliban in support of the Afghan government. [Link]
  • The Afghan Army has changed its strategy, feeling its forces were overstretched. The military will now abandon some district centers and force guarding population centers, border crossing, and other key infrastructure. [Link]

Middle East

  • Israel bombed northern Lebanon. [Link]
  • The US and Iraq are working to formalize an agreement to transition the US forces in Iraq to a training role by the end of the year. The US is believed to have 2,500 troops deployed to Iraq. [Link]

Nigeria

  • The US begins delivery of light attack aircraft to Nigeria. [Link]
