US News

  • Trump sets a September 15th deadline for a US company to acquire TikTok or the platform will be banned in the US. Trump added that the company that buys TikTok should pay the US Treasury for facilitating the deal. [Link]
  • Homeland Security seized $2 billion from travelers from 2000 to 2016. [Link] 
  • Raytheon has signed a deal with Israel to make the Iron Dome air defense system in the US. Israel and Raytheon hope to export the missiles to other allies. [Link]

Korea

  • Japan’s ruling party is looking at changing its policies to develop the ability to preemptively strike China and North Korea. [Link]
  • A UN report claims North Korea has developed the ability to miniaturize nuclear weapons to put on missiles. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the deputy head of the Taliban on a video call. The purpose of the call was to push for intra-Afghan talks. [Link]
  • An ISIS attack on an Afghan prison allowed 300 inmates to escape. [Link]

Israel

  • Israel bombed targets around Syria’s capital. Israel claims it carried out the strikes to prevent a Syrian attack on Israel. [Link]

Africa

  • Covid is starting to spread in northern Libya as the Government of National Accord is ready for an attack on Sirte. Sirte is held by the Libyan National Army and home to about 125,000 civilians. [Link]
  • Fifteen people were killed at a displaced peoples camp in Cameroon. Boko Haram is suspected of being behind the attack. [Link]
