US News

  • A former police officer from Loveland, Colorado, Daria Jalali, was sentenced to 45 days in jail for her role in the rough arrest of a 73-year-old woman with dementia in 2020. The woman suffered a dislocated shoulder and a fractured humerus bone during the interaction. Fox
  • The US Senate passed a $430 billion spending bill after Vice President Kamala Harris voted in favor of the Democrats to break a tie against unanimous Republican opposition. Democrats say the bill will help curb inflation. DW
  • Hundreds of Cubans and Haitians are being arrested after landing in Florida. CNN
  • Former Haitian Senator Yvon Buissereth was shot while police battled with gangs in the neighborhood of Laboule, following an outbreak of violence in recent weeks in Port-au-Prince and a turf war in the town of Cite Soleil that left 148 people lost, wounded or missing. Reuters

Russia

  • The Financial Times reported that Western nations are unhappy with Turkey’s growing ties with Russia and that Ankara could potentially face sanctions for its pledge to increase trade with Moscow. AWC

China

  • The US will participate in war games with the Indian military in an area of India that is less than 62 miles away from the country’s disputed border with China, known as the Line of Actual Control. AWC
  • About 10 warships each from China and Taiwan sailed at close quarters in the Taiwan Strait, with some Chinese vessels crossing the median line. Reuters
  • The Chinese military will from now on conduct “regular” drills on the eastern side of the median line of the Taiwan Strait, Chinese state television reported. Reuters
  • China announced a new series of military drills near Taiwan. Axios

Israel’s Attack on Gaza

  • The office of caretaker Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid confirmed on Sunday that a cease-fire with Palestinian militants would come into effect at 11:30 p.m. local time. DW
  • Gaza officials said 43 Palestinians, almost half of them civilians and including children, had so far been killed. Reuters
  • Fifteen children were among those killed in Gaza. Including five boys killed at a cemetery. MEE
  • The Gaza Health Ministry warns chronic shortages of essential medicines and medical equipment, and a worsening fuel crisis are putting residents’ lives at risk. MEE

Syria

  • Russia announced that it conducted an airstrike against a group of US-backed militants in Syria near al-Tanf, a US military base located in the south of the country. AWC
