Israel Responsible for Two-Thirds of Journalist Deaths in 2025

killers in five nations were responsible for 84 of journalist deaths in 2025

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found that Israel killed the majority of murdered journalists in 2025.

“Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist and media worker killings in 2025, driving the total number killed worldwide last year to a record 129,” a CPJ report released on Wednesday explained. It is the “highest ever number documented by the CPJ since the organization started keeping records more than three decades ago.”

CPJ said that Israel has now murdered more journalists than any other country in history. “Within the context of rising conflict worldwide, Israel’s disregard for the lives of journalists — and the international laws intended to protect them — is, however, unparalleled.”

It continued, “Israel has now killed more journalists than any other government since CPJ began collecting records in 1992, making the Israel-Gaza war the deadliest on record for journalists.”

The CPJ has recorded over 200 journalists killed by Israel since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. However, Gaza sources have reported a higher number of journalists killed by Israel.

Israel has targeted several journalists in Gaza, claiming they were members of Hamas. Tel Aviv has also barred foreign journalists from the Strip, limiting the amount of information about the Israeli onslaught from reaching the global audience.
