Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called President Donald Trump, requesting that the US delay an attack on Iran. Other Middle Eastern countries have asked Washington not to start a new war with the Islamic Republic.
According to the New York Times, on Wednesday, Netanyahu asked Trump to postpone an attack on Iran. The outlet did not explain why Netanyahu made the request. Washington and Tel Aviv did not respond to the Times requests to comment on the story.
The outlet notes that the sources who relayed Netanyahu’s request may be attempting to deceive the Iranian leadership. Before Israel attacked Iran in June, Trump indicated that there was no imminent threat.
Other countries in the region oppose the US going to war with Iran. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Egypt have lobbied the Trump administration against striking Iran.
If the US attacks Iran, Tehran says it will retaliate against American forces across the Middle East. The Department of War is preparing by consolidating US forces in the region to more defensible bases.
The White House maintains that the President has not made a final decision on striking Iran. Trump has threatened to attack Iran over its treatment of protesters, its civilian nuclear program, and rebuilding its missile capabilities.
