In a near reversal of pre-attack polling, Republicans now say they support President Donald Trump’s decision to bomb Iranian nuclear sites last weekend. Overall, roughly half of American voters are still opposed the US strikes, according to a new survey.
In a YouGov poll conducted within 24 hours of the June 22 bombing raid, 69% of Republicans said they supported the strikes, with only 13% opposed. Before the attack, GOP voters told YouGov the opposite, with 53% opposed to military action, while just 19% wanted Trump to bomb the Islamic Republic.
Far more Republicans approve of the U.S. bombing of Iran than thought the U.S. military should get involved before the attack (69% vs. 23%)

Democratic voters’ opinion of the strikes remained relatively unchanged, while independent voters increased their support from 11% pre-attack to 27% afterward. Overall, a large number of Americans continued to oppose the bombing, with 45% against and 35% endorsing Trump’s decision.
A CNN poll published on Tuesday reported similar results, with 88% of Democrats and 60% of independents opposed to Trump’s strikes, while a slight majority of Republicans approved. It found that 56% of Americans overall still disapprove of the military operation.
The opposition to the strikes may have been rooted in concerns about Iranian retaliation and US involvement in another prolonged conflict, as most respondents in the earlier YouGov poll said they expected Iran to directly attack the US or hit American bases in the Middle East. Tehran did launch a symbolic strike on the largest US air base in the region just hours before agreeing to a ceasefire.
Trump pledged to be a peacemaker and to avoid regime change wars in the Middle East. However, through the first five months of his term, he has failed to end any wars while escalating US military action in the Middle East and Somalia.
