The Department of War is preparing for President Donald Trump to order an attack on Iran.
Two officials speaking with Reuters said the military is gearing up for weeks of sustained combat. Trump has threatened to attack Iran if Tehran does not agree to a deal with the US.
The US and Israel are demanding that Iran agree to restrictions on its missile and nuclear program, as well as cutting ties with allies in the region. Tehran has offered to place limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the US removing sanctions.
The US and Israeli demands amount to Iran abandoning its national defense strategy. Senator Lindsey Graham claimed that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were in agreement that there would be regime change in Iran, either through diplomacy or war.
Trump has ordered a massive military buildup in the Middle East, including two aircraft carrier strike groups, several advanced air defense systems, and additional fighter jets.
The US had two aircraft carrier strike groups in the Middle East in June when Israel declared an unprovoked war with Iran. After several days, the US joined the Israeli strikes on Iran. Tehran responded with a symbolic attack on an American base in Qatar before a ceasefire was declared.
