US News

  • Juan Guaido was hired by Florida International University (FIU) to give a series of talks and mentor students. Guaido launched a coup attempt in Venezuela in 2019 but failed to gain any significant support within the country. The Institute 
  • The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted in favor of a US-sponsored resolution that authorizes a deployment of Kenyan-led troops to Haiti. The Washington-backed government in Port-au-Prince requested the mission after gangs captured large swaths of the capital city. The US has pledged financial support and training for the international force deployed to Haiti under the UN flag. AWC
  • The House on Tuesday voted to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker, marking the first time in history a House speaker was removed through a resolution to oust them. AWC

Russia

  • Russian officials on Monday downplayed the impact of Congress passing a short-term funding bill over the weekend that did not include funds to spend on supporting Ukraine, saying the US will “find the money.” AWC
  • The Pentagon has warned Congress that it’s running out of money to replace stockpiles of weapons that have been sent to Ukraine and has been forced to slow down the replenishment of the US military. AWC
  • Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on Monday night filed a resolution to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) after questioning if the House GOP leader cut a secret deal with the White House on Ukraine aid. AWC
  • The White House said Monday that the US will be sending another weapons package to Ukraine “soon” to show continued support for the war after Congress did not include Ukraine aid in the short-term funding bill it passed over the weekend. AWC
  • A leaked US government strategy shows the Biden administration is far more concerned about corruption in Ukraine than it’s publicly letting on, POLITICO reported on Monday. AWC
  • A Qatari official said Doha could potentially host diplomats from Russia and Ukraine for negotiations aimed at ending the war. The Institute 
  • President Joe Biden held a call with the leaders of several allied nations to stress that weapon shipments to Ukraine cannot end for any reason. Some members of NATO recently expressed an unwillingness or inability to provide further arms to Kiev. The Institute 
  • The UK has run out of military equipment that it can give to Ukraine, according to a senior British military source speaking to The Telegraph. AWC
  • The US will run out of money to pay for Ukrainian government salaries and services within the next month if Congress does not authorize more Ukraine aid, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed US and Ukrainian officials. AWC

China

  • A long-standing agreement that gives the US military access to the Marshall Islands in exchange for financial aid and other benefits lapsed on September 30, The South China Morning Post reported on Monday. AWC
  • The US and the Philippines on Monday kicked off two weeks of annual naval exercises amid heightened tensions with China in the South China Sea. AWC
  • Taiwan’s Vice Minister for National Defense Hsu Yen-pu has urged the US to speed up the delivery of weapons Taiwan has already purchased and asked for other forms of military assistance. AWC

Syria

  • At least two Syrian soldiers were wounded in an Israeli airstrike in Syria’s eastern Deir Ezzor province late Monday night, Syrian state media reported. AWC
