Five Israeli military facilities were damaged during the 12-day war with Iran. Among the sites that were damaged include the base housing the IDF’s top intelligence unit.
The damage to the bases is based on a review of satellite images obtained from the University of Oregon. The images “suggest five previously unreported military facilities were hit by six Iranian missiles in the north, south and centre of Israel, including a major air base, an intelligence gathering centre and a logistics base,” the Telegraph reported on Saturday.
Tel Aviv has attempted to prevent the disclosure of successful Iranian strikes during the war, claiming revealing damage helps Tehran calibrate its targeting. After Tel launched a surprise attack on June 13, Tehran retaliated by firing long-range missiles at Israel.
With US assistance, Israel claimed to have downed about 90% of the hundreds of missiles fired by Iran. The Telegraph reports that at least 42 Iranian missiles caused damage in Israel.
Over the 12-day conflict, Washington and Tel Aviv spent billions of dollars shooting down Iranian missiles. The US and Israel used a significant portion of their supply of missile interceptors.
Analysis by the Telegraph found that Iranian missiles were progressively more likely to evade Israeli air defenses as the war continued. Near the end of the conflict, Israel was forced to ration its interceptors, leaving some areas more vulnerable.
Additionally, using a large number of interceptors will have an impact on other conflicts. The Pentagon reports a shortage of Patriot missiles, prompting the US to halt shipments to Ukraine.
