Several House Democrats expressed anger with Rep. Rashida Tlaib after the Democratic Congresswoman introduced a War Powers Resolution that would force President Donald Trump to halt Israel’s war against Lebanon.
The War Powers Resolution introduced by Tlaib in late March says, Tlaib unveiled her legislation in late March that requires the “removal of all US Armed Forces’ participation in unauthorized hostilities in Lebanon, including involvement in targeting assistance and intelligence sharing for the Israeli airstrikes and ground invasion.”
One senior Democrat said in the caucus that Tlaib’s resolution was a problem. “People are not happy that she is making people take this vote,” they explained.
Israel has been waging war against Lebanon since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Even after Hezbollah and Tel Aviv agreed to a ceasefire in 2024, the IDF continued to bomb and occupy Lebanon.
After Israel and the US attacked Iran in February, Hezbollah broke its truce and resumed attacks on Israel and IDF forces in Lebanon.
The fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has continued to escalate, with the IDF taking positions north of the Latani River. The war in Lebanon has become an issue in ending the conflict with Iran. Tehran says any agreement to end the war must include a ceasefire that extends to Lebanon.
Earlier this week, Iran’s Tasnim News reported that Tehran cut off communication with Washington over Israel continuing to violate the ceasefire with Lebanon.
The Lebanon War Powers Resolution, as well as a War Powers Resolution about Iran, are expected to receive votes in the House this week.
