US News 

  • Atlanta disbands its police department’s drug unit. The police will try to focus on solving violent crimes. [Link]
  • The House passes a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing Trump from starting a war with Iran. The resolution is concurrent and cannot be vetoed by the president. Republicans argue even if it passes the Senate, the resolution is non-binding. [Link]
  • Trump says the US has increased sanctions on Iran. Trump did not provide details on the sanctions. [Link]
  • A bipartisan effort in the Senate is pushing a bill that would make a deal between the US and Israel – where the US provides Israel with $3.3 billion in aid annually – a law. [Link]
  • Trump suggests expanding NATO to the Middle East. [Link]
  • The US will deploy police to Honduras to train Honduran immigration enforcement. [Link]  

Venezuela

  • Under new leadership, the Argentinian government no longer recognizes Guaido as president of Venezuela. The government also revoked the status of Guaido’s envoy to Argentina. [Link]
  • US-recognized president of Venezuela Juan Guaido lost his position as head of a Venezuelan legislative body. Guaido’s claim on the presidency is tied to his position as head of the legislative body. [Link]

Europe

  • Spain has imprisoned several Catalan leaders who held an independence vote in 2017. One of those imprisoned is also a member of the European Parliament. As a member of the European Parliament, he should have immunity. However, the Spanish high court says he will not be released. [Link]

Vietnam

  • Protesters in Vietnam attacked a military base with hand grenades and petrol bombs. Three police officers and one protester was killed. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • Two Afghan pilots were killed when their military helicopter crashed. [Link]
  • A US drone strike reportedly killed 60 civilians in Afghanistan. [Link]

Middle East

  • China says it shares highly similar views with Russia on the Middle East. [Link]
  • Vice President Pence said the US has received intelligence that Iran instructed Shia militias not to attack IS forces. [Link]
  • Four Turkish soldiers were killed by a car bomb in northeast Syria. [Link]

Africa

  • The Libyan National Army signals it will not abide by the ceasefire proposed by Russia and Turkey. [Link]
  • Twenty-five soldiers were killed by Islamists in Niger. [Link]
