Infant Mortality Spikes in Afghanistan as Officials Say 13,000+ Newborns Have Died Since January

The Afghan government has estimated that more than 13,000 newborns have died in the country so far this year – just six months after the US withdrew humanitarian aid, seized official bank accounts and sanctioned the new regime in Kabul.  Health Ministry spokesman Jawid Hazher “expressed alarm” over the growing crisis last week, saying there have been about 124,800 premature births in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2022 alone.  “Normally 10 percent of these children die,” he added, “so, as an estimate, 13,700 of these children died” since January.  While Hazher said economic factors...

NATO to Deploy 4 New Battlegroups to Eastern Europe, Warns of Consequences for Chemical Weapons Use

NATO is preparing a military build-up along its Eastern flank, according to the civilian head of the alliance, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. The deployment will consist of four new battlegroups deployed to Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Romania.  Battlegroups typically are made up of 1,000-1,500 soldiers. The trans-Atlantic alliance currently has similar deployments in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. The news of an ISIS leader elimination, Abu Ibrahim al-Quraishi, by the U.S. forces in Syria’s Idlib went around the whole world last month. On the night between Wednesday February 9 to Thursday February 10, American commandos had airdropped from helicopters in the town of Atmeh that located near the Turkish border, and then they stormed a house, where allegedly the Daesh’s boss was hiding.
