Haiti

  • Addressing the UN on Tuesday, President Joe Biden called on the Security Council (UNSC) to authorize sending a military force into Haiti to restore order. Russia

  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters Monday that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington this week as Congress is debating new spending on the proxy war in Ukraine. AWC
  • A drone carrying an explosive device was found on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast on Sunday evening, an incident Bulgaria’s defense minister said was likely “related” to the war in Ukraine. AWC
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed six high-ranking military officials. The sweeping firings come as the Ukrainian leader plans to travel to Washington later this week to lobby Congress to pass a multi-billion funding package for Kiev. The Institute 
  • A top NATO official warned that rising ammunition prices could mean that Western countries do not spend enough on the military to sufficiently arm Ukraine. Washington and its allies have pledged nearly $100 billion in weapons to Kiev since the Russian invasion last year. The Institute

  • Top American defense officials attended a gathering of Ukraine’s Western backers in Germany and called for allies to dig deep to support Kiev. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin downplayed questions from reports about long-range missiles while emphasizing Ukraine’s need for more air defenses. The Institute  

Nagorno-Karabakh

  • Azerbaijan on Tuesday launched a new assault against Nagorno-Karabakh in what appears to be the start of a new major war over the ethnic Armenian enclave. AWC

China

  • Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it detected 103 Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) warplanes operating around Taiwan from 6 am Sunday to 6 am Monday, the most in a 24-hour period since Taipei began releasing the figures in September 2020. AWC
  • The US is planning to open a Space Force command post in Japan as it’s looking to increase its space capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region as part of the buildup aimed at China. AWC

Middle East

  • Five Iranian Americans arrived in Qatar on Monday after being released by Iranian authorities as part of a prisoner swap deal between Washington and Tehran that was mediated by Doha and unfroze $6 billion in Iranian funds. AWC
  • Washington imposed sanctions on four entities and seven people in Russia, China, and Turkey over their alleged assistance with Tehran’s drone program which the US says has significantly benefited Russia in its war with Ukraine. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has denounced the accusations that Tehran has been arming Moscow since the Kremlin launched its invasion last year. The Institute 
  • US and Saudi officials are discussing the terms of a potential mutual defense treaty that would be similar to pacts the US has with South Korea and Japan, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. AWC
  • Negotiators representing Yemen’s Houthis left Saudi Arabia on Tuesday after five days of talks aimed at reaching an agreement to end the eight-year conflict between the two parties. AWC
