North Korea Tests New ‘Tactical Guided Weapon’ as US, South Korea Set to Begin Joint War Games

nk missile tests 4.17.2022

North Korea fired two missiles it claims are "new-type tactical guided weapons." The test comes a day before the US and South Korea kick off joint war games.  Bloomberg reported a message from the South Korean military claiming the two missiles traveled about 60 miles. Joseph Dempsey, a research associate at International Institute for Strategic Studies, said, “the ‘new tactical guided weapon’ outwardly resembles their KN-23 and KN-23 [short-range ballistic missile]. The use of a wheeled quad launcher indicates a smaller, lighter and likely shorter-range missile.” North Korean media KCNA...

North Korea Conducts Missile Test After Declaring ‘New Situation’ With China

north korea g64d9c9e62 1920

North Korea has conducted a ballistic missile test which it said would help launch new reconnaissance satellites into orbit. Japanese and South Korea officials announced the launch early Sunday, saying the munition traveled 190 miles before landing in the Sea of Japan.  While the Joe Biden administration condemned the test, it has largely ignored the Korean nuclear file since coming to power and has done little to advance diplomacy on the peninsula. Late in 2021, South Korean President Moon Jae-in attempted to broker an official end to the Korean War, which was never terminated with a...

Will Trump Meet with Kim Jong-un Again?

On FPF #515, I discuss the latest push by South Korean President Moon Jae-in to have another meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un. The top US negotiator traveled to South Korea in an attempt to restart talks. Trump has now signaled he be open to talks. However, North Korea is taking a public stand against meeting with Trump before November's election. I explain why North Korea is refusing to meet with the US and the damage done by John Bolton.  Links John Dangelo - EARN...

Is Kim Jong-un Alive? guest Will Porter

Will Porter returns to Foreign Policy Focus to discuss the seeming reappearance of Kim Jong-un. Will breaks down the evidence that shows Kim's recent public visit to a new factory, after being absent from public view for three weeks. During his absence, the world outside of North Korea speculated about the North Korean chain of succession if the Supreme Leader would die. However, it looks like Kim is alive and well.

Is Kim Jong-un Dead? guest Will Porter

Will Porter returns to the show to discuss the rumors of Kim Jong-un's death. Will explains the media reports suggesting Kim is dead, or will soon die, are based on flimsy sources. However, Kim has been absent from public life for a few weeks and missed a significant North Korean holiday. The rumors of Kim's death reveals the US needs to improve its relationship with the isolated country.

4/3/20 Doug Bandow on the Fake North Korean Threat and America’s Role in Yemen

Scott interviews Doug Bandow about his recent article for the National Interest, which discusses the effects of the coronavirus on U.S. relations with North Korea. Bandow explains how after years of hand-wringing over the imminent threat posed by Kim Jong-un's aggressive nuclear posturing, and the need for America to respond strongly, everyone forgets all about it as soon as an actual emergency like the current pandemic emerges. If North Korea really posed an existential threat to the United States, we would probably still be concerned. Scott and Bandow also discuss America's role in the...

9/20/19 Christine Ahn on a Chance for Peace With North Korea

Christine Ahn joins the show for an update on the Korean peace process, now that John Bolton is out of the Trump administration. She thinks Bolton was a major obstacle to Korean unification, and that now Trump might go along with the negotiations between the North and South—something that recent American presidents have been unwilling to do. One of the democrats' favorite attacks against Trump, that he "sides with dictators," completely misses the point, says Ahn. In defying John Bolton to negotiate with Kim Jong-un, Trump is really siding with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the...

7/30/19 Tim Shorrock on the Democrats Attacking Trump from the Right

Tim Shorrock joins the show to discuss U.S. negotiations with Korea and the status of the relations between North and South. Lately soldiers from the North and South have begun patrolling together, one of several important symbolic gestures in the process of reconciliation between the two nations. Recently Donald Trump became the first president to visit the North, and Shorrock thinks his willingness to participate in negotiations, which previous presidents have not, has been hugely important. Unfortunately the democrats have almost unanimously condemned President Trump's willingness to...

Trump on Twitter: The Good & Bad

On FPF #373, I discuss how Trump has used Twitter to make threats and conduct diplomacy. Trump famously tweeted an invitation to Kim Jong-un to meet at the DMZ. The tweet led to a meeting of the two leaders and Trump being the first president to cross into North Korea. The meeting ended with plans for new talks. I explain why the reports of a 'freeze' agreement and Stephen Biegun leading the talks make me optimistic.  Trump also used Twitter to threaten more sanctions against Iran. Trump claimed the Iranians were secretly enriching and the JCPOA was going to expire. I debunk Trump's lies...
