Yemen Update: Saudi Strike Obliterates Home, Kills 10 Civilians

Saudi Arabia has carried out another airstrike in the northern Hajjah Province of Yemen over the weekend, destroying a house in Washhah District, and killing at least 10 civilians within, according to the Yemeni news agency. As is often the case with such strikes, all the casualties were civilians, and women and children were reportedly among the slain. There was no indication why this site was attacked in the first place, and the Saudis have yet to comment. This lack of transparency from the Saudis is also par for the course, with Saudis not commenting on their own attacks, but emphasizing...

Pentagon Admits There Is No Corroboration of ‘Bountygate’ Claims

Continuing the allegation of Russian bounty payments to Taliban to kill U.S. troops, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley both told the House Armed Services Committee that they’ve seen no corroboration of the claim, nor do they believe anyone was actually killed on the basis of it. This allegation emerged last month in The New York Times and has been oft-repeated, despite a lack of evidence. Earlier this week, a poll showed a majority of Americans believe the claim, though the military has repeatedly said they just don’t have the evidence to defend it....

Israel Expected to Seek Double U.S. Aid, Early Delivery of Funds

With the coronavirus pandemic putting the US in potential economic crisis, Israeli officials are keen to get as much military aid out of the Americans, and as quickly, as they can. The requests seek the aid delivery well ahead of schedule, and potentially double the agreed amount. Israel is expected to present this as their own coronavirus-related need, with some officials saying that since US aid tends to be spent heavily on US arms, produced in US factories, it should be easy to present it as domestic spending, not foreign aid. A lot of officials are at least reasonably sure that this will...

Somali MP: US Airstrike Killed Six Somali Civilians on a Minibus

US claimed everyone killed was a 'terrorist' US African Command (AFRICOM) is promising an investigation after an airstrike against a minibus full of people was reported by locals, including a Somali MP, of having killed six civilians. The US had reported on the strike on Tuesday, saying they destroyed the minibus and killed “five terrorists.” As is so common with US killings, they did not name any of the victims. MP Mahad Dhoore confirmed everyone inside was civilian. One of the family members of the victims noted that the slain included his 70-year-old father, who cannot walk without a...

US Marines Arrive on Yemen’s Island of Socotra to Back UAE: US installs Patriot missiles on UAE-occupied island

It’s not clear what US intentions are, but a group of US Marines arrived at the Yemeni island of Socotra over the weekend, meeting with the occupying United Arab Emirates forces, and installing Patriot missile systems there. The US hasn’t announced why they are back on Socotra, an island strategically located near the mouth of the Gulf of Aden. The UAE has been seen as wanting to keep the island after the Yemen War for a base, and there is speculation that the US has designs on a base as well. The UAE will reportedly “lease” the island for a period of 95 years. There has been no major fighting...

Russian Airstrikes Kill at Least 34 Turkish Soldiers in Syria: Turkey’s bid to reclaim Idlib observation post sparks airstrikes

Weeks of threats by Turkish President Erdogan to retake Syria’s Idlib Province by force went extremely poorly on Thursday, when Turkish forces moved into an observation post south of Idlib City, and were immediately hammered by airstrikes from both Russia and Syria. At least 34 Turkish soldiers were reported killed in this strike, a major number of casualties. Turkey’s Hatay Governor reported casualties were still flowing into his province from Idlib. Turkey has put thousands of troops in Idlib recently, and Erdogan had promised to reclaim all 10 of the observation posts,...

Taliban: No Peace Deal If US Troops Stay in Afghanistan

Taliban: No Peace Deal If US Troops Stay in Afghanistan

Deputy leader says withdrawal is main thing the Taliban wants With a potential US-Taliban peace deal in Afghanistan potentially at hand, Taliban Deputy Leader Sirajuddin Haqqani wrote an op-ed in the New York Times clarifying exactly what the Taliban hopes to get out of the deal, what is expected and what is their red line. For a war that’s dragged on for 19 years, Taliban demands are still straightforward and easy to understand. The main goal is, as ever, the removal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, and the deal was conditioned on the US withdrawing from the country. Haqqani dismissed...
