To the extent imperfect decision-making is accepted, we then seek to solve for who has the best chance of answering the question correctly, he with local knowledge or he without? He who will reap the consequences of his decision, or he who will not? David L. Bahnsen, There’s No Free Lunch: 250 Economic Truths David L. Vaccines, Autonomy, and Mandates: A Libertarian Analysis
Prefatory Note Given the subject matter discussed below, I believe it prudent to state at the outset that I am not at all opposed to vaccinations themselves: indeed, I have received a COVID-19 vaccine, as well as all other normal-course vaccinations recommended for someone my age. Yet there are, it seems to me, interesting, difficult questions surrounding the state’s role in promoting or mandating vaccines. The goal here is to start a conversation not about the effectiveness of vaccines, but about the individual’s sphere of autonomy and what kinds of medical decisions are within it, and...
Salafis Throwing Bombs: How American and British Planners Partnered With Al-Qaeda Affiliated Groups At the Start of the Syrian Civil War
Introduction In the mainstream view, al-Qaeda did not play a role in the Syria conflict until Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dispatched his deputy, Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, to Syria in August 2011 to establish a wing of the group there, called Jabhat al-Nusra, or the Nusra Front. Additionally, al-Qaeda allegedly did not carry out any military operations until December 2011 and did not announce its establishment until January 2012. However, there is evidence that al-Qaeda affiliated militants were involved in the Syrian conflict much earlier. Saudi intelligence...
For One Day, Protestors Stopped the War Machine
I’ve attended most of the major antiwar protests in Washington since 9/11. At a 2005 protest, a cop tried to whack me on the head with a wooden pole. At a 2007 protest, I snapped a picture showing George W. Bush hanging next to the U.S. Capitol. But my favorite protest was a potent little ruckus that I almost missed. On a sunny late summer day in 2013, I ambled to downtown Washington to hike with a bunch of folks who enjoyed bantering as much as I did. The route for the jaunt started on the National Mall, passing by the Smithsonian, heading toward the World War II Memorial and points...

Cops Kill Man
This is the one the FTP covered last week where the cops knew they were going to a bogus noise complaint, they hid out of the way of the peephole after banging on the door in the middle of the night, then when the guy answered the door with a gun in his hand, they yelled drop it as though they just assume he's trying to kill them -- at no point does he point it at them -- then when he did in fact squat down to put down the gun -- reacting in admirable immediate fashion under the pressure of their threats -- they blew the guy away anyway. And you and I and every single person in the world...
For Families of Those Murdered by Deputies, a Long Wait For Answers
We already know the answer:...
Misinformed Voters
This will probably come as no surprise to regular readers of LI, but a 2018 survey on basic political knowledge revealed that the average American voter is not simply uninformed, but is systematically misinformed. The survey asked 24 questions to a sample of 1,000 American voters, 18 of which had dichotomous responses (e.g. True/False). If you were to blindfold a respondent, give them two buttons to signify their responses, and never ask them the questions, they would still be right, on average, about 50% of the time. Compare that to the American voter, who correctly answered only 42.9%...
The Good The Bad And The Ugly – Democrat Candidates Answer Foreign Policy Questions
The Council On Foreign Relations has asked each Democratic candidate for President 12 questions on foreign policy. Not all of the candidates have responded yet, but since it is CFR, I am confident they will. A mixed bag of answers. The one question they are all consistently bad at answering is on the issue of Israel and Palestine. They all call for a two state solution which is never going to happen. Neither Tulsi Gabbard or Elizabeth Warren have responded yet Election 2020: Candidates Answer CFR's...
