Cops Kill Man

Iraq War Vet Given the Abu Ghraib Treatment to Death "The two-hour-long tape shows what led up to the moment Edwards, a decorated veteran who served in Kosovo and Iraq, was strapped in a chair for 16 minutes, as he seemed to struggle to breathe, his chest heaving and his restrained body convulsing. Although the video has no sound, Edwards seemed to be either yelling, coughing or gasping under the sheer white hood deputies put over his head to keep him from spitting. Jail staff periodically glanced through the windows of his cell but did not enter as Edwards struggled. Nearby, deputies...

CDC, Epidemics And “Panic”

Could world health authorities be concealing information from the public at all right now? Who knows, could be. If they are doing this, is the need to "prevent panic" itself preventing people from having the information they need to take proactive protective measures? We're meant to think that panic prevents authorities from managing behavior, and makes epidemic disease outbreaks worse. However, what if the authorities themselves simply don't have the resources, competence or ability to manage outbreaks? What if, like the economy, these kinds of things are nearly impossible to plan for...

Jim Grant: The World Created by Upside-Down Interest Rates

Central banks are trapped. "Five years into the negative rate experiment, and a decade on in radical monetary improvisation, the central bankers are looking for a way back to normalcy. Not finding it, they are casting around for new ways to control what they seem unable to understand." "The unintended consequences of public policies are usually more consequential than the ones the policy makers had banked on. Lest the central bankers forget, interest rates are prices, not policy levers. And as prices, they set investment hurdle rates and measure credit risk. Artificially low rates...

April tax Receipts Up 1.8% at $2 Trillion

Unfortunately, spending is up 7.6% to $2.57 trillion.  The largest increase is debt service, up 13.6% from last year.  This is in a low interest rate environment.  The Fed is trapped in maintaining low interest rates.  Danielle DiMartino: "Fed controlled rates theoretically set floor. Investors ultimately determine rate at which governments borrow. Artificially low floor drags down curve unless Fed loses control."

Wonderful News: George Bush is Dead

No, not W., unfortunately. But his horrible, murderous father, George H. W. Bush, is now finally dead like all those people he killed. As he deserves to be. Too bad Hell isn't real. That would be hilarious to think that Bush was forever trapped in a burning cell. At least we can hope he was terrified at the end.

The Antiwar Comic: This is What He Wants

In many ways, it doesn't surprise me that Trump wants this.  No skin off his back, right?  Still, would've been nice of him to close it.  For a few minutes during the campaign, I thought he might just to spite Obama.  For more comics, visit The Webcomic...

Murder Trial Opens for Cop Who Killed 6-Year-Old

Marksville, LA — Sixteen months ago, one of the worst police killings ever to be recorded on video rocked the country. Jeremy Mardis, a 6-year-old boy, was gunned down in cold blood by two bad Louisiana cops — Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse Jr. Now, one of those officers is finally being tried for this horrific act which was caught on a body camera. In what the head of Louisiana State police called ‘the most disturbing thing he’s ever seen,’ Mardis was murdered as he rode with his father, Chris Few, as he sat strapped into the front seat of the car. “He didn’t deserve to die like...

Slow-Going in Mosul

Patrick Cockburn writes that the combined forces invading Mosul are bogged down, and that due to large numbers of civilians trapped there the U.S. air power cannot just flatten the place as they did in Ramadi. Perhaps there will still be enough ISIS left in Mosul and Raqqa for Trump to "justify" sending in the Marines or Airborne next spring after all.

The Brief Case for Pacifism – Bryan Caplan, Ph.D.

Why We Should Study China

I would posit that there is no civilization so utterly foreign to Americans than China. Often, American impressions of China are informed by preconceptions, myth, and fear of the other. For the average American, the sum of all knowledge about China is derived...
