TGIF: War Over Ukraine?

Today, the United States and Allies conducted an extraordinary flight under the Open Skies Treaty. The timing of this flight is intended to reaffirm U.S. commitment to Ukraine and other partner nations.‎ The United States is resolute in our support for the security of European nations. --Department of Defense news release, Dec. 6, 2018 Who wants to go to war against Russia in defense of Ukraine over the Kerch Strait, which lies between the Black and Azov seas and between Russia’s Taman Peninsula and Russian-annexed Crimea? A show of hands, please. But careful: don’t misconstrue my...

TGIF: Trump and Putin – How about Getting Rid of Your Nukes?

The United States and Russia remained at odds, continuing military exercises along the borders of NATO, undermining the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), upgrading their nuclear arsenals, and eschewing arms control negotiations. --"It's Two Minutes to Midnight," Bulletin of Atomic Scientists I, for one, was much disappointed by the Trump-Putin summit -- but not for the reasons most others were. I was not hoping that Trump would punch Putin in the nose or insult him or declare new sanctions. Nor was I hoping he would cancel the meeting. Although Trump's performance...

3/7/18 Aaron Maté on Year 1 of Russiagate and its consequences

Aaron Maté of The Real News joins Scott to discuss two of his latest pieces for The Nation, "Hyping the Mueller Indictment" and "What We've Learned in Year 1 of Russiagate." Maté explains why he thinks the Trump-Russia collusion case is much ado about nothing and how Trump's pre-election attempts to de-escalate tensions with Russia have been misconstrued as collusion. Scott and Maté then discuss how the centrist left, with the help of Facebook and corporate media, is using the Russiagate conspiracy to double down on the Hillary Clinton wing of the Democratic party. Aaron Maté is a host...

3/6/18 Ray McGovern: Russia’s Latest Nuclear Weapons

Ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern returns to the show to follow up on Russia-United States relations in the aftermath of Vladimir Putin's recent speech in which he unveiled new nuclear weapons. McGovern details the history of Russian-American relations, dating back to the days of the USSR from World War II to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the lead up to the Vladimir Putin years of the present. McGovern draws parallels between the Cuban Missile Crisis and the current escalation of tensions and explains how close the United States and Russia came to a full nuclear disarmament during the Reagan...

2/28/18 Ray McGovern on U.S.-Russia relations and the Deep State

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern returns to the show to discuss the merits of Russian interference in American democracy, explaining what he thinks prompted the Russia scandal and why he's convinced the supposed hack was in fact a leak. McGovern does what he can to analyze the U.S.-Russia tensions from the perspective of Vladimir Putin. McGovern then explains what he means when he says "Deep State" and why he thinks the Carter Page memo is revelatory. Why does this all matter? According to McGovern, the U.S.-Russia relations are as frayed and combustible as they have been at any point...

Engineering Another Hyped Trump-Russia Story

There is a new Trump-Russia story making the rounds this week. It's about a real estate deal that the Trump Organization considered in Moscow in 2016. If the deal had gone through, there'd be a new Trump Tower in Moscow today, but nothing came of it. Nothing, that is, except for a major story in The New York Times, which first broke the news under a modest headline: Trump Associate Boasted That Moscow Business Deal ‘Will Get Donald Elected’ Following the Times' lead, NPR's Up First program also decided to hype the story by pulling a seemingly damning quote out of context: Guest: ...One of...

Russia Responds to New US Sanctions by Moving to Dump the Dollar

Following new sanctions against Russia that President Donald Trump signed into law last week, Moscow responded Monday by announcing Russia will speed up work on reducing the country’s dependence on Western payment systems and the U.S. dollar in general, according to Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency. "We will of course intensify work related to import substitution, reduction of dependence on U.S. payment systems, on the dollar as a settling currency and so on. It is becoming a vital need," said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Monday, as  cited by RIA....

Russia is Trolling the Sh*t out of Hillary Clinton and the Mainstream Media

Moscow — Russia’s state-funded news network, RT, is apparently now sponsoring ads in a Moscow airport targeting Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party. Images of the signs, posted on Reddit over the weekend, come as the mainstream media continues to push the notion that Russia intervened in the 2016 election on behalf of Donald Trump. “Missed a plane? Lost an election? Blame it on us!” says one of the ads, alluding to the fact that in terms of seats in Washington, D.C., the Democrat Party was decimated in 2016. “The longer you watch, the more upset Hillary Clinton becomes,” says...

The Putin Interviews

Oliver Stone's 4 hours of interviews of Russian President Vladimir Putin are available here. And ain't it hilarious to see the TV goons vilifying Stone for daring to allow Vlad the Terrible to speak for himself for just a few minutes. He might be sending secret coded messages to al Qaeda sleeper cells I bet! Or denying Sandy Hook! Stephen Colbert was completely oblivious as to how much he's turned into his old character in these crazy Hillary-excusing times. Oh, look, turns out they cut the part of the Colbert interview when Stone correctly pointed to Israeli interference in America's...

The Case Against Mitt Romney for State

Frank Bruni makes the case for Romney as Secretary of State: "Over his own two presidential campaigns, Romney became ever more fluent in international issues, and he even showed some prescience, identifying Vladimir Putin’s Russia as a grave menace before other politicians woke up to that. He was ridiculed for dwelling in the past. Turns out he was living in the future." The idea that Romney “showed some prescience” in 2011-12 about Russia (or anything else) is silly revisionism, but I expect we’ll hear about it a lot if Trump ends up choosing him. Even granting that a stopped clock can...
