Lunatic With a Plan: Erdogan and Turkey’s Economic Woes

vladimir putin and recep tayyip erdoğan (2015 06 13) 3

Since the first assault on Turkey’s finances in 2018, which I wrote about multiple times (here, here, and here), I’ve been the lone voice telling everyone that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a lunatic but he’s a lunatic with a plan. That plan is to de-dollarize the economy of a valuable member of NATO geostrategically. Since the first shots across the bow by the Trump administration at Erdogan’s toying with those powers east of the Bosporus (Russia, China and Iran) the Turkish lira has been the primary mode of attack against Erdogan. Erdogan has pursued what has been deemed unorthodox...

Who Killed Bond Yields?

Central Banks of course. "In lieu of common sense, however, the guilty will use a whole lot of those impressive sounding words to obfuscate instead of argument, while very much counting otherwise on the favorable rulings of the judge (politicians) who lets this charade go on and on because the judge also knows that if the truth ever got out they’d be right there in the defendant’s chair with the central bankers."...

Assange Indictment Proves: Liberty Is Your Sword. Let Tech Be Your Shield

"The bureaucratic system of the modern nation-state, administered by central banks, magistrates, presidents and prime ministers, has alienated us from the harmonious state of the world we belong to, depriving us of our innate rights and liberties. Now, imagination from computer science inspires us to rediscover intrinsic value within ourselves — the wisdom of nature that governs our behavior and our rights to express ourselves freely and create our own life."- NOZOMI HAYASE, PH.D.Read full...

Today Is National Savings Day

National Savings Day sets aside October 12th to recognize those who value the act of saving and to provide simple steps to show getting started isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Not a day the Federal Reserve celebrates. The daily level of the federal funds rate back to 1954. The fed funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions (banks and credit unions) lend reserve balances to other depository institutions overnight, on an uncollateralized basis. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times a year to determine the federal funds target rate. The current...

Money-Supply Growth Remained Sluggish in May

Money supply growth inched up in May, rising slightly above March's and April's growth levels. But overall growth levels remain quite low compared to growth rates experienced from 2009 to 2016. March's growth rate, for examples, was at a 12-year (145-month) low. In May, year-over-year growth in the money supply was at 2.21 percent. That was up from April's growth rate of 2.00 percent. May 2019's growth rate was well down from May 2018's rate of 4.19 percent.   The money-supply metric used here — the "true" or Rothbard-Salerno money supply measure (TMS) — is the metric developed by Murray...

Jim Grant: The World Created by Upside-Down Interest Rates

Central banks are trapped. "Five years into the negative rate experiment, and a decade on in radical monetary improvisation, the central bankers are looking for a way back to normalcy. Not finding it, they are casting around for new ways to control what they seem unable to understand." "The unintended consequences of public policies are usually more consequential than the ones the policy makers had banked on. Lest the central bankers forget, interest rates are prices, not policy levers. And as prices, they set investment hurdle rates and measure credit risk. Artificially low rates...

Assange Arrested

On FPF #335, I discuss the arrest of Julian Assange. Assange was arrested by the UK after Ecuador's president rescinded his asylum. Assange now faces the potential of being extradited to the US; an indictment against Julian Assange charges him with crimes related to Chelsea Manning's leaking of documents in 2010. I argue the persecution of Assange is an attack on journalism.  Links Cassandra...

The EU is Rotting (and Its Banks are Insolvent)

The EU as a political construction is in a state of terminal decay. We know this for one reason and one reason alone: its core principle is the state is superior to its people. A system of government can only work over the longer term if it recognises that it is the servant of the people, not its master. It matters not what electoral system is in place, so long as this principle is adhered to. The EU executive in Brussels does not accept electoral primacy. It shares with Marxist communism a belief in statist primacy instead. The only difference between the two creeds is Marx planned to...
